Arthritis

Physiotherapy plays an important part in treatment for most people with arthritis.

A physiotherapist is a crucial member of a team of healthcare professionals who help you to resume or maintain an active and independent life both at home and work. At Proficient physio, we believe in assessing movement and can also show you how to protect your joints.

Your physiotherapist will:

  • offer advice and reassurance to self-manage this
  • help to build confidence about managing your condition
  • address any concerns or external sources contributing to
  • set appropriate goals to keep you as active as

Back Pain /Sciatica

Low back pain could result from disorders affecting the lumbar spine, intervertebral discs, ligaments surrounding the spine and discs, spinal cord and nerves, low back muscles, pelvis, and abdominal internal organs, and the skin covering the lumbar area.

Treatment for low back pain depends on the diagnosis and underlying cause. So, diagnosis, aetiology, and symptoms are important considerations for the physiotherapist at Proficient Physio. Our treatment approach incorporates advanced clinical reasoning skills and is based on the bio-psychosocial model of care which is focused both on the injury and its psychological impact to the patient.

Balance

Balance is a fundamental aspect of our daily lives, often taken for granted until it becomes an issue. Whether it’s getting out of bed, strolling through the park, or climbing stairs, balance plays a vital role in our ability to move safely and confidently.

However, as we age or face certain medical conditions, maintaining balance can become challenging, and the risk of falls increases. This is where physiotherapy

steps in as a valuable ally in helping individuals regain and enhance their balance, ultimately preventing falls.

At Proficient physio we focus on improving the balance, preventing falls, and empowering individuals to regain confidence and independence in daily life.

Neck pain

Physiotherapy is considered one of the most helpful treatment for neck pain management. It helps to relieve stiffness and aches from the muscles and enhances mobility. Physiotherapy for neck pain generally involves two components – passive physical therapy, using physical agents/modalities and active exercises. As every

individual is different, so is the necks pain. At Proficient Physio we have a

customised plan to address the neck pain based on individual assessment and best evidence-based approach

Headaches/Migraines

At Proficient Physio, the senior physiotherapist will explain the

role physiotherapy can play in relieving chronic headaches and improving your quality of life.

She will discuss the effectiveness of manual therapy in treating three main types of headaches: migraines, tension headaches and, especially, cervicogenic (neck- related) headaches. And she also recommends some easy lifestyle changes that can be made to ease or avoid pain

Physiotherapy and manual therapy are beneficial in the management of most types of headaches – and very effective in the treatment of cervicogenic headaches. This common type of headache refers to a secondary headache that originates from the cervical spine (neck).

Cervicogenic headaches differ from primary headaches such as tension headaches and migraines which originate from the brain itself.

If you need help with your neck-related headaches , book an appointment with our Physiotherapist at Proficient Physio.

Elbow/Wrist and hand pain

  • How you injured you hand exactly?
  • Did it come on without a warning?

Many people don’t notice when they have injured themselves, they only notice the pain that comes after the injury!

Below are some of the common causes of hand, wrist, and elbow pain.

Tendinitis– an overuse injury when the tendons become inflamed which further leads to swelling and pain with movement of the affected area.

Fracture

Fractures in the wrist and forearm area are common injuries resulting falls. During the healing phase, typically while in a cast or after surgery, the fingers, wrist, and elbow become very stiff, and range of motion and strength can be lost.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by excessive pressure on the median nerve, which causes crowding and irritation of the carpal tunnel. Numbness, stiffness, or pain can radiate through your fingers, hands, wrists, or forearms as a result of this illness.

Tennis elbow

Tennis elbow is a common term for lateral (outside) epicondylitis. It happens with repetitive tasks that often involve gripping and extending the wrist such as when holding a tennis racket, paintbrush, or hammer. Severe tenderness will be present around the outside of your elbow and can cause pain with gripping objects, lifting objects, and twisting of the forearm.

Golfer’s elbow

The term “golfer’s elbow” refers to medial (inside) epicondylitis. It’s like tennis elbow, but the discomfort is on the inside of the elbow. Overuse of the muscles that flex your wrist and fingers causes discomfort, which leads to this injury.

Plantar Fasciitis

This is a condition affecting the fascia (thick band of tissue) in the sole of your foot that connects the heel to the toes; and is usually affected by load and incorrect footwear.

Knee pain

Ranging from an acute sporting injury to long term pain due to osteoarthritis, physiotherapy is extremely beneficial for knee pain. Physiotherapy helps you gain movement and function get you on a path for recovery.

Hip pain

The hip is a large secure ball and socket joint deep in the groin designed to cope with repeated movement and impact. It can be affected by wear and tear, fractures, ligament tears and muscle strains. It is also one of the main joints affected by Osteoarthritis.

Pain in your thigh, groin, back or buttock could be originating from the hips. Similarly, pain you feel in the hip area may be caused by a problem in your back or the sacro- iliac joint in the pelvis.

Sometimes even an x-ray is notoriously poor in providing the answer. A proper diagnosis is therefore crucial.

After discussing the history of your problem our physiotherapists will conduct a comprehensive assessment and thorough examination of all these areas to decide on the most effective hip pain treatment.

Pelvic Pain

Physiotherapy has proven to be a successful treatment for chronic pelvic pain, particularly bladder pain syndrome, endometriosis and pain secondary to pelvic surgery.

Often sufferers of chronic pelvic pain have overactive pelvic floor muscles. Physiotherapy can help with releasing these muscles, which helps to reduce the symptoms of pain and of bladder, bowel and sexual dysfunction.

The trained physiotherapist helps to calm down the pathways that feed into pain by making you focus on a lot on relaxation, breathing techniques, acupuncture and

stretching.

Post surgical rehab

Physiotherapy plays a crucial role in post-operative care and rehabilitation by helping patients regain their strength, mobility and function. It can also help manage pain levels using a range of techniques like exercise, electrotherapy and manual therapy.

If your doctor or consultant has recommended physiotherapy before or after your surgery, the physiotherapist at Proficient Physio can help you along your journey towards maximum recovery.
